Check engine light, explained properly

A check engine light means the car's computer has recorded a fault. It does not tell you how serious it is, and the free code read at a parts counter usually gives you a number and a guess.

A code is a starting point, not an answer. A code that says the oxygen sensor is reading out of range does not mean the oxygen sensor is broken. It means something in that system is not behaving, and the sensor is the part that noticed.

What I do

• Read all stored, pending and permanent codes, not just the first one
• Look at freeze frame data, which captures what the engine was doing at the moment the fault triggered
• Watch live sensor data with the engine running, which is where most real answers come from
• Check the obvious physical causes before condemning any part
• Tell you what it means, what it will cost, and how urgent it is

Common causes worth knowing

• Loose or perished fuel cap. Genuinely a common cause of an evaporative system code, and free to fix.
• Ignition coils and spark plugs. The usual cause of misfire codes, especially if the car stumbles under load.
• Oxygen and air flow sensors. Often reporting a problem elsewhere rather than being faulty themselves.
• Catalytic converter efficiency. Sometimes the converter, often the thing that damaged it.
• Vacuum leaks. Cheap to fix once found, and the cause of a surprising number of odd running complaints.

Fault found or no charge

If I cannot tell you what is causing it, you do not pay for the diagnosis. That is not a marketing line, it is how I would want to be treated by someone I had never met.

Common questions

Can I keep driving with the light on?

If it is steady, the car is driving normally and not overheating, usually yes for a short while. If it is flashing, or the car is running badly, no.

Why did the light go off by itself?

Many faults clear their own light after a number of clean drive cycles. The code usually stays stored, which is why a proper scan still finds it.
